Over 200,000 Canadians Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty!!

When? It hasn’t happened yet. STAND UP and TAKE ACTION on Oct 16-19 is a three day global mobilization to demonstrate support for the fight against poverty and the Millennium Development Goals – www.standagainstpoverty.org STAND UP can be as big or little as you make it. For it to count as a STAND UP event all you have to do is read the “pledge” and then those who agree stand up and then you report your numbers.

In previous years there was a big focus on organizing events specifically for STAND UP, but this year we’re encouraging people to give more attention to inserting STAND UP moments into pre-existing events – anywhere with a large gathering of people – and using it to also get people to sign on to the campaign to MAKE POVERTY HISTORY.

For the first STAND UP I was in Vernon. A couple members of this group I was with went back to their former high schools and got the principles to read the Stand Up pledge over the PA system and got teachers to distribute MAKE POVERTY HISTORY sign on sheets in their classrooms. Then, after the principle read the STAND UP pledge over the PA, the teachers counted the number of students that stood up and reported the numbers back to the principle while passing along the sign on sheets. A couple hundred people stood up and were counted, just like that.

Why can’t we do this all across Canada?

Another university group, after getting permission from the different professors, went to a number of big classes at their university and read the STAND UP pledge and then asked students who agree to STAND UP. They also circulated MAKE POVERTY HISTORY sign on sheets. They then took a picture and recorded their numbers. Several groups have done this in the past and have been able to mobilize hundreds of students, sometimes in as little as 15 minutes.

Why can’t we do this all across Canada?

Finally, I remember being blown away by this guy from Germany, who for the first STAND UP, figured out how to get permission to read the STAND UP pledge at a big soccer game. Over 30,000 people stood up… How many sporting events, concerts and other events with thousands in attendance are taking place between Oct 16-18? How many local sporting events at schools and otherwise? How many religious services where you could insert a STAND UP moment?

And now, of course, the most important question. How do we make it happen? www.makepovertyhistory.ca
